Casa Surf is a “tranquilo” budget hostel with three double rooms (can sleep 3) and one dorm room (sleeps 4), providing accommodation for about 13 people. The common area at the front is equipped with a bar, and is a perfect environment for sharing travel stories with new friends. We also very recently completed an incredible upper hammock deck, and can provide mosquito nets,  so in the high season there are even more options for backpackers on a budget!

Here at Casa Surf, we believe in real community hostel living, and keeping the pura vida vibe alive is our number one priority. As former backpackers ourselves, we try our best to provide a haven where even the most budget-conscious traveller will be satisfied. Our $30 Surf Eat Sleep Deal is the best value around, but for those of you who really need to pinch colones we have a guest kitchen in the back, and there is a small mercado 10 minutes up the road to buy basic ingredients to cook your own meals.

The Casa Surf owners love a drink as much as the next guy, so fiestas are encouraged! When we meet people from all around the world, we can’t help but wonder what kind of drinking games they play, and our goal is to learn how to say ‘Cheers” in every language possible.  If you are musically inclined, Dan is more than happy to share his guitar and when you add cervezas to a sing-along it doesn’t take much to get a party started!

If relaxing is more your style, grab a fruit smoothie, a book from  our generous exchange  – please leave one for the next guest – and pick a hammock. Playa Avellanas is a haven for wildlife, so get your camera and go for a stroll down to the beach. Don’t forget your sunscreen! You may stay longer than you thought.

Breakfast at Casa Surf is usually served after the surf session, consisting of typical Gallo Pinto con Huevos (rice and beans with eggs), avocado, plantains and fresh fruit,  or breakfast burritos- perfect fuel for a ravenous surfer- at only $6!

Dinners are delicious stir-frys, hearty pastas, or the typical casados (meat, rice, beans, and veggies) and the ingredients usually depend on how the fish are biting that day and what veggies are in season. Some examples are Mango Curry Linguine, Teriyaki Tuna Steaks and Maple Ginger Mahi-Mahi Casados. We also cater to all dietary needs and encourage vegetarian dishes to take advantage of delicious and nutritious local organic produce. Our friends and neighbours at Vida y Salud Huerta Orgánica provide us with 100% organic (meaning no pesticides too!) seasonal Costa Rican vegetables and fruit, and we are stoked to be able to support small farms here in Costa Rica.  All dinners are $8 and of course, fully vegetarian meals can also be arranged. If you plan on eating every meal with us, check out the $30 Surf Eat Sleep Deal – you’ll save up to $8 a day!

If you love animals, Casa Surf is the perfect place for you! The hostel is also home to our two dogs, Kila and Osito, and the chillest cats you’ll ever meet. The pets are livin’ the Pura Vida life too, so don’t be surprised to see Kila lounging in a hammock, or Toña the cat shredding on the skateboard!
