Between surf sessions, put your feet up and chill in one of our hammocks, start a game of cards, or watch the monkeys play in the trees in front of the hostel. If the waves are small, or you’re just looking for a change of pace, take a day trip into the famous town of Tamarindo (Endless Summer) and see the kind of commercial party town Avellanas might have turned into had steps not been taken to avoid it. If you don’t surf, or just want to see more of what this country has to offer, tours and other trips can be arranged.

Yoga – We offer a variety of yoga styles to encourage self-exploration and a sense of unity amongst our ever growing community. Practices flow like the tides to fulfill the needs of your body and mind in between beach trips, nourishing meals and restful siestas.

Wildlife Watching Tours and Nature Walks – Playa Avellanas is home to a wide variety of animals. There is a large troop of howler monkeys that lives in the mango trees across the road from Casa Surf, and it is uncommon to see fewer than 5 iguanas a day! There are many beautiful birds and butterflies, and vibrant purple-and-orange crabs that live in the mangroves beside the boardwalk. If you’re in the right place at the right time, you may even be lucky enough to spot a dolphin playing in the waves, or see the majestic form of a humpback whale.

From June to December, the beach becomes a nesting-ground for sea turtles, and red-lighted Turtle Patrols can be organized. It’s more than just an interesting stroll; Turtle Patrols often scare away predators after eggs – animal or human.
Horseback riding – Why discover the beauty of Costa Rica on foot when you can do it from the back of a horse? Gallop across the beach and watch the sunset over the ocean astride a typical ‘criolla’ pony, or take part in a trail ride through the Costa Rican rainforest.

Canopy tours – If you’re looking for an adrenaline rush, ziplining through the trees over 100 feet above ground should be right up your alley.

Diving & Snorkelling – You’ve successfully surfed on top of the waves, now explore beneath them. We’ll take you on a day trip to Playas del Coco, where there’s a large variety of fish, rays, turtles and other marine life. If you’re not ready to get up close and personal with them yet, grab a mask and snorkel to watch them from above.

Playa Avellanas – Even without an animal sighting (unlikely), the beach itself is a gorgeous attraction. Although its obvious treasure is in the variety and consistency of surf breaks, you don’t need to own a board to appreciate its beauty. The boardwalk stroll through the mangroves is enchanting in itself, and it only takes a few hours to walk the entire length of this pristine beach. If you get hot, and the waves at high tide look a bit intimidating to swim in, find one of the many deep pools in the river and cool off. Afterwards, head down to Lola’s or Cabinas las Olas restaurant for an icy sunset beer.

Volcan Rincon de la Vieja – This National Park fulfills almost every activity on your Costa Rican “To-Do” list, and some you never even thought of until you get there!
• River Tubing
• Canopy Tours/ Ziplining
• Rappelling/ Rock Climbing
• Waterfall canyoning
• Hacienda ( traditional ranch) tour
• Horseback rides to Waterfalls
• Volcano hike and exploration of active crater
• Hot mineral springs and mudbaths
