How to Get Here From Liberia / Tamarindo
Playa Avellanas is located 13 km south of Playa Tamarindo, which is the largest town nearby. Unfortunately, there is no bus between Tamarindo and here. Every once in a while someone attempts a shuttle service, especially in the high season,  so ask around and maybe you’ll get lucky.  If not, a taxi from Tamarindo should be between $25 – $30, but give us a call first and maybe we can arrange transportation.

If you are driving from Liberia or Tamarindo, follow the signs for Tamarindo until the last turn to the right. Instead, drive straight through Villareal and the road will turn to dirt. Follow the signs to the Hacienda Pinilla (there are a few of them). At the end of the pavement, take the left over the bridge, and follow the signs to Cabinas las Olas. After, mas o menos, 7 km you will see a large sign in front of Cabinas las Olas. Directly across the street is Casa Surf.

Bus from Santa Cruz :
BUS TERMINAL DIRIA SANTA CRUZ (hours approximately)

Santa Cruz departing to Pinilla and Avellanas:
Monday to Friday at 11:30 a.m. / 18:00 p.m.
Sunday 11:30 a.m. only

Avellanas departing to Pinilla and Santa Cruz
Monday to Friday at 05:45 a.m. / 13:45 p.m.
Sunday 05:45 a.m. only

The bus terminal DIRIA in Santa Cruz is next to Supercompro Supermarket, and the bus to Avellanas is called “Pinilla bus” by the locals. The ride from Santa Cruz to here is usually 1-1 1/2 hours, and costs around 1200 colones. To hop off at Casa Surf, tell the Pinilla bus driver: “Avellanas, Casa Surf”. You’ll find yourself right in front of the hostel.

If you arrive in Santa Cruz a little too late for the bus, there are many taxi drivers who can give you a lift here. The usual rate is around $30 but, again, give us a call and we’ll see what we can do.

P.S Being a very undeveloped beach, Avellanas does not have a bank or ATM, and most places can’t accept credit cards. Please keep this in mind and bring enough cash for your entire stay.
