Playa Avellanas boasts world-class waves that break consistently year round. Situated in a very receptive location for surf, Avellanas can handle the big swells and provide quality waves on smaller days that are perfect for learning. There are five main peaks (not including the secret spots) along Playa Avellanas that work on different tides, offering all day surf sessions if you can handle it. Water temperature seldom drops below 28 C (82 F), so leave your wetsuit at home!

Little Hawaii – a reef/point break right that offers long, ruler edged walls that are perfect for dialling in new moves. Works best around low tide and handles the big swell very nicely.

The Rivermouth – an A-Frame reef break that consistently pitches a fast right and a long left. Holds big swell and can get very hollow when conditions are right. Works best a little after the low tide and is considered one of the best waves in the area.

Palo Seco – a long stretch of white sand beach break with lots of peaks to choose from. A great wave for longboarding that is also a perfect place to learn to surf when the waves are smaller. Breaks best from mid to high tide.

Lola’s – a couple peaks that break over a sand and rock bottom. A very ripable wave at high tide, and offers some awesome tubes when the tide is going out.

La Purruja – a left point that only breaks on big swells. When this wave is working there are very long barrelling lefts that can blow your mind. It is best with a high tide and offshore wind.

Seasons – From November to April, Playa Avellanas benefits from offshore wind that usually lasts all day long. Keep your eyes open for swells from the North/West that can really light up our breaks. May through October makes up our “green” season when other weather patterns interfere with the prevailing offshore winds. In this season we usually receive larger South swells that come in with an offshore breeze in the morning and a glassy session in the afternoon.

Boat Trip to Witches Rock and Ollie’s Point
If you’re planning a surf trip to Costa Rica, chances are that you already know about Witches Rock, the infamous wave that was etched in surfer’s minds after the movie “The Endless Summer”. Witches Rock is a hollow and perfect beach break that benefits from off-shore winds year round. The main peak peels off of a river mouth and works best from mid to high tide while rising. Witches is known for big, hollow barrels that you will never forget!

Ollie’s Point breaks with such consistency that you will think a machine is creating the waves. This right hand point break is so perfect that most consider it to be the best wave in Costa Rica, and many think that it is one of the best in the world. The predictability of the wave makes it ideal for dialling in manoeuvres and practicing some new tricks.

Surf Lessons & Board Rentals
Learning to surf is one of the most enjoyable and rewarding experiences you will ever have! It may seem a bit intimidating at first, but rest assured that our number one priority is your safety, and a close second is to spark in you a hidden passion for riding the waves. Dan is a very patient and experienced instructor and he will teach you the proper procedure with enthusiasm while taking the necessary time to go over all potential hazards, including riptides.

Next we go over the surfers’ etiquette and get familiar with the board on land. If you initially feel uneasy about entering the ocean, relax and take your time. The beach preparation will go on until you feel completely at ease with your body, the board and your “pop up” tecnique. Dan will also go over the finer points of surfing: the importance of the tide and wind, how to gauge a wave, and when to let the big ones go.

Once you are fully versed in the surf, our primary goal is to get you comfortable on the board and standing up in the white water. You will always feel safe as Dan will be there with you the entire time, helping you advance at this life-enhancing sport. Above all, the number one objective for your first surf session is to have fun!

Our surf lessons are considered to be the most comprehensive in the area, and we pride ourselves on helping all levels of surfers improve in a fun, safe environment. Lessons usually run for between 2-3 hours and include the board rental for the rest of the day so you can continue to practice your new skills. A one on one lesson runs at a very reasonable $50 per person, and group rates can be arranged. When you learn to surf at Casa Surf, smiles and good times are guaranteed.
